Double gold for Murphy at Paris Open

Point Blank Gym head instructor, Tim Murphy, made a triumphant return to active competition this past weekend winning double gold at the IBJJF Paris International Open Championship.

Murphy, a previous regular on the competition scene, was side-lined early last year with a serious ACL injury. The subsequent surgery and months of rehab meant Tim had not competed since winning a silver medal in the European No-Gi Championship in Rome in 2015.

First up for Tim was the gi division on Saturday. Tim made short work of the Semi-Final match-up securing numerous guard passes to win a comfortable points victory. In the final, Murphy didn’t have it so easy having to deal with a frustrating worm guard for the majority of the match. Eventually freeing himself, Murphy attempted a Bernardo Faria style over/under pass to kneebar, in the ensuing scramble his opponent spun away and presented his back to Murphy, the match ended with Tim digging in for a choke, having secured enough points for victory.

On the Sunday it was the no-gi and a chance at another medal. In the semi-final Murphy opened strong with a double leg takedown, his opponent attempted to reverse it but in doing so left an opening for Tim to secure a sweep. His opponent, defending a back-take, attempted an unorthodox armlock but Murphy managed to free himself to see out the match four point to zero and progress to the final.

Murphy started strong again in the final scoring a takedown and almost secured a back-take but in doing so both competitors rolled out of bounds. It was a cagey affair from there on out with Murphy, up by points and numerous advantages, weary of a takedown attempt. In the closing seconds his opponent made his move attempting a throw but Murphy defended well and finish the match in mount to secure a deserved victory.

Speaking after the final on Sunday Mr. Murphy said “for a time there after the surgery even getting back on the mat seemed a far way off so to be back competing and to medal again is certainly very satisfying”.

Clean sweep for Team Point Blank at WCFC 6

Point Blank Gym took three wins from three at WCFC 6 on November 5th, with Jason Quinn winning the middleweight title against Shaolin MMA’s Andreaas Binder.

First up was Mateusz Kopyto, who took on Szczepan Ziólkowski from Nenagh Warriors. Both fighters were happy to keep the fight standing but it was Mateusz who dominated all three rounds, showcasing some great boxing skills.

Next up was Gary Mannion, who took on Dawid Wisniosz from Fantom MMA. Gary was rocked in the first round against the experienced kickboxer but recovered quickly and came back strong in rounds 2 and 3, landing some solid strikes standing and dominating the fight when it hit the ground.

The last fight of the night for Point Blank was Jason Quinn’s title fight against Andreaas Binder. The first round was close with both fighters having some success standing and in the clinch. Jason finished the round stronger, landing a good take down near the end. Rounds 2 and 3 were all one-way traffic for Quinn, who showcased great takedowns, ground control and solid striking from half guard to take an emphatic win.

Big thanks to all our members who came and supported, it made for a great night for the club. Next up in CRC in Dublin on Sunday December 11th.

About Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling martial art; in other words no strikes are allowed. BJJ focuses on technique, skill and the correct use of leverage. This means that it can be used by a smaller opponent to defeat a much larger one.

Common Questions

When are the classes?
Classes will run every Wednesday and Friday at 6pm.

How much is it to sign up?
We are currently running a new promotion where you can have a 14 day, no obligation, free trial before signing up so feel free to call down and try out some classes at no charge.

What do I need to bring?
In these classes the normal BJJ uniform called the gi or kimono will be used. However you don’t need one of these to get started. All you need to bring are shorts or tracksuit bottoms and a tshirt. A bottle of water would be a good idea too!

Is any previous experience required?
Our new ladies program is aimed at complete beginners; no previous experience of any kind is needed or expected.

Do I need to be fit to join?
Not at all, as we always say, getting you fit is our job. It’s natural to be a bit worried about not being fit enough to train but it is really not an issue. Once you start training in BJJ you will start getting fitter as you are learning. Everyone gets tired during their first class but you’ll be surprised how quickly you start coming up to speed.
